Youth in foster care are especially vulnerable to sexual exploitation due to traumatic experiences they have faced and a lack of supportive adult relationships. SJRC Texas has been serving survivors of sex trafficking since 2009 and strives to provide a safe place for these youth to heal. Trafficked youth suffer from severe trauma, history of physical and emotional abuse, and abandonment issues. Many times, they come to us hurting, angry, and confused. We have encountered youth who have been trafficked by strangers, a neighbor, and even their own parents. At SJRC Texas it is our mission to help them not only heal, but to thrive! Read below to see how we are doing this every day!
Stephanie’s life before SJRC was one of constant chaos, sexual exploitation, and fear. Stephanie is a mother of a 2-year-old boy (Paul) who she loves dearly. Stephanie was first trafficked by a family friend at the age of 15 years old. Her life quickly spiraled from there as she lost ties with her family, friends, and ultimately her son who was removed from her care. At 17 years old, Stephanie was homeless, traumatized, and without the one thing that she still cared about in this world, her son. SJRC Texas received the referral for Stephanie and after learning that she had a son advocated for the opportunity for them to be placed together. After 5 months of separation they were finally reunited! Stephanie came to SJRC Texas with not much more than her child and what she could carry. She was terrified, exhausted, and unsure of her future. Stephanie knew that this was her chance to regain custody of her son and ensure that he was never removed again. Not long after being placed with us we learned that her son Paul required surgery on his spine which resulted in a 3-week hospital stay. SJRC Texas staff and case managers were there every step of the way to ensure that her son was cared for and that Stephanie was supported through this process. This situation would be terrifying for an average parent much less a teen mother in foster care with a small support system of CPS workers and SJRC Staff.
Stephanie’s Story Continued
Since her placement date Stephanie has been able to receive intensive therapy for the complex trauma she survived. She is learning appropriate boundaries and opening up about the abuse she suffered at the hands of her family and trafficker. She is learning how to nurture and show her son the love that she herself was not given. While Stephanie still has a long road ahead of her, she is focused on her family’s future and excited about where it will take her. With the support from SJRC Texas she was able to graduate high school, and obtain her driver’s license. She is now working in the community and saving money for when she is ready to live on her own. Stephanie states that she cannot believe the turn that her life has taken and is scared to think what would have happen if she did not find her way to SJRC Texas!
How we are helping..
In 2019, SJRC Texas served 28 individual youth who have been trafficked by an adult, and 25 individual youth who scored ‘Clear Concern’ for being trafficked on the CSE-IT (Child Sexual Exploitation – Identification Tool) This is 53 Texas children, who otherwise may have continued to be sexually exploited and forgotten without our help!
At our New Braunfels campus, we specialize in working with young girls who are pregnant or parenting. These young mothers choose to parent their babies despite the scary circumstances of many of the pregnancies. In some cases, the father of their child was their trafficker or a person who paid for sex acts. As you can imagine this is incredibly traumatizing for the young mothers. SJRC Texas provides a safe haven for these youth and their babies so that they can address their trauma, learn parenting skills, and work towards a positive future for their families. SJRC Case Managers double as birthing partners who attend all prenatal appointments, birthing, and breastfeeding classes. When it is time for delivery these same case managers stay at the hospital through the mother’s entire stay. This ensures that the young mother feels supported, safe, and is never alone during one of the scariest times in a young woman’s life!
Our Bulverde campus serves school aged youth who are in state custody. At this campus we work with youth who are victims of child sex trafficking and help them learn to reengage with the community in safe environment. These youth are often more than two grade levels behind in school and must work hard to overcome this set back. After recovery, many youth struggle to focus on their education as they are still in survival mode. With therapeutic intervention and through our on-campus charter school we can provide individualized education plans to help youth catch up and reach their goals.
We Practice TBRI Model with All Our Youth
All of our programs engage the youth according to the Trust Based Relational Intervention model. Each youth receives individual and group therapy according to their needs. SJRC Texas conducts youth treatment and goal planning with an understanding of the 6 Stages of Change and how that impacts decision making.
The most helpful part of the program is all the emotional support I’ve received & the resources I’ve been given.
